If you’re going to Greece and trying to decide which island to visit, we would highly recommend visiting Mykonos. Read our travel guide of how to spend 3 days in Mykonos.
We spent 3 full days (and one half day) on Mykonos before taking a ferry over to our next island, Santorini. This gave us enough time to enjoy the beautiful old port, explore some beaches, and even take a day trip to the island of Delos. If you’re not convinced on Mykonos yet just wait until you see the blue water and white streets!
Day 1: Arrive & Walk Around
You will arrive (most likely) by ferry to the new port of Mykonos. The new port is slightly farther away but where most of the large ferries will come in.
- It is important to note that there is a new port and an old port in Mykonos and they are in different locations.
- Check with your host if transportation from the port is included with your hotel or accomodations. We had someone from our hotel meet us at the port and drive us to the hotel which was very convenient!
Spend some time walking around the white walking streets of Mykonos Town! There is no wrong way to go as you’ll walk past lots of shops and restaurants.
Walk west to the Windmills which gives you a perfect picture opportunity and great views looking out over Little Venice!
There is a small beach in the old port called Old Port Beach. We arrived on a hot day and jumped in with a bunch of locals. It is a small, simple beach but is very close to the town. It’s a great option if you are looking for a place to jump in right after arriving!
There are so many great restaurants in Mykonos. Grab a seat outside and enjoy being right next to the beautiful blue water.

Day 2: Go to the Beach
Three very popular beaches on Mykonos are Platis Gialos Beach , Paradise Beach and Super Paradise Beach. The easiest way to get to all three of those beaches is by the public bus. The buses are coach buses and are extremely nice, comfortable and very inexpensive to ride.
There is a bus stop close to Mykonos Town just up the hill past the windmills. Read more information about bus stop locations and bus times here.
We spent much of the day at Platis Gialos Beach. We chose this beach because it was relatively close to Mykonos Town, accessible by bus, and recommended for families and couples. Mykonos is known for having numerous beautiful beaches. With so many to choose from we recommend doing some research beforehand depending on what type of beach you are looking for.
Travel Truth: Platis Gialos Beach was absolutely beautiful and we would recommend visiting! However, there are many hotels surrounding so be prepared for beach club after beach club. Depending on what you are looking for and how much money you are looking to spend, paying for a beach chair or cabana (usually complete with towels and food/drink service) can be worth it.
From Platis Gialos we took the water taxi to Paradise Beach. When you first get off the bus (when arriving to Platis Gialos) directly in front of you is a dock. This is where we boarded the water taxi.
- Although the ride is short, the water taxi ride was a really inexpensive way to take a mini boat tour and see other nearby beaches.
Paradise Beach definitely has a different feel than Platis Gialos Beach. If you are looking for music, drinks and a beach club then this is the beach for you.
It is extremely easy to catch the bus from Paradise Beach back to Mykonos Town so we were able to spend most of the day at Platis Gialos Beach, take the water taxi to Paradise Beach for a little and then take the bus back to Mykonos Town all in a day.
Day 3: Day Trip to Delos Island
After spending the previous day on the beach in the sun we opted to do a day trip to the nearby island of Delos. Delos is believed to be the birthplace of Apollo and hosts many impressive ruins, a small museum, as well as many breathtaking views of nearby Mykonos.

Trips from Mykonos to Delos are extremely common because it is so close. We bought tickets right on the dock in the old port of Mykonos Town. Once we arrived at Delos we waited in line to buy tickets to enter. Make sure to double check departure times both from Mykonos and returning from Delos to avoid missing the boat
Travel Truth: Delos is very flat aside from one peak and was extremely windy when we visited. Depending on the weather, prepare for it to be windier and dustier than on Mykonos. I would recommend closed toe shoes that you can wear with uneven ground. It is very rocky in some places. Also, don’t forget sunscreen! Both of us got extremely sunburnt that day from walking around as there is little to no shade.
Make sure to enjoy one last sunset over the water before leaving this beautiful island!

Day 4:
Pack up and head back to the new port to catch a ferry to your next destination. Depending on the weather and where you are going, ferries sometimes run late in Greece. Our ferry from Mykonos to Santorini was significantly late. Because of this we arrived at Santorini much later than expected. Just keep that in mind when making plans for the rest of the day!
